Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) has revealed that they have seized 2000 phones from inmates in various prisons over the past four months.
George Rwigamba, the Commissioner General of RCS has said that from February up to date they have seized more than 2000 phones from 14 prisons across the country.
He revealed this on Tuesday as he visited Rusizi prison accommodating 2892 inmates .CGP Rwigamba requested inmates to avoid using phones because it’s known the jailed phone users want to distort evidence and cases filed against them ,make bad plans and betray the country.
“We have seized more than 2000 phones over the past four months from inmates. These phones have been taken to the headquarters of RCS,” he said.
CGP Rwigamba said that phones enter jails through prison guards or relatives bringing food to inmates.
Prison regulations stipulate that any inmate caught red handed with a phone is supposed to be put in a solitary confinement for 10 days.
No inmate is allowed to own a phone in Rwanda.
