In an attempt to reduce and deter crimes and apprehend criminals, local leaders need to increase collaboration and exchange of information with security organs.

The message was conveyed by the Mayor of Bugesera, Emmanuel Nsanzumuhire during the meeting with over 160 cell and sector executive secretaries, Police officers and other security organs held in Nyamata town recently.

“Identifying and know people visiting your villages, properly register their identities, clearly indicate duration of stay and reasons of being in that area, and this as well helps in identifying and tracing those who have committed crimes or people with ulterior motives,” Mayor Nsanzumuhire said.

“We all serve the same cause of public welfare, security and development, so it’s equally upon you as local leaders to harmonise your responsibilities with those of the security organs by sensitizing residents on the importance of having a secure and peaceful environment and their role in community policing,” he added.

The District Police Commander (DPC) of Bugesera, Supt. Albert Mpumuro reminded local leaders that assault, battery, domestic violence, child abuse, theft, domestic and gender-based crimes are results of excessive consumption of alcohol and abusing drugs.

He appealed to local leaders to increase awareness campaigns against harmful substances, work closely with residents in fighting and preventing crimes.
