Police in Nyamagabe District have arrested a 19-year old man in connection with vandalizing and stealing electricity cables that connect households.

Anastase Nyandwi was arrested in Gasaka Sector following information provided by residents, the District Police Commander, Supt. François Segakware said.

“Residents gave us information that someone was cutting electric cables and hiding them at his house; we worked with local leaders and residents and arrested the suspect and recovered the cables in his house,” the DPC said.

He went on to thank residents for exercising their community policing powers to report the suspect and to protect public infrastructures.

"These infrastructures are meant to support community development and the country in general; vandalizing them means slowing down development, which we can’t allow,” said SSP Segakware.

He appealed to the general public to jealously protect such public facilities and always report to police anyone that attempts to destroy them.

The suspect risks a jail sentence of up to five years.

Under article 406 of the penal code, "any person who willfully destroys or damages in any way, in all or a part, buildings, bridges, dams, water pipes, water pipe routes, roads, railways or any other means of communication or electric power infrastructure, wells or any other buildings which do not belong to him/her, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of two to five years and a fine of twice to ten times the value of the damaged property."

Our community policing powers us citizens is to report the suspect and to protect public infrastructures to our Rwanda National Police because these infrastructures are meant to support community development and the country in general; vandalizing them means slowing down development, which we can’t allow.
