Dr Sezibera Richard, former Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) has won elections in Southern Province to replace Senator Mucyo Jean de Dieu who passed away early October 2016 after collapsing from parliamentary buildings.
Preliminary results by district and sector advisory committees indicated that Dr Sezibera Richard had 317 votes equaling 63.9% followed by the next contender Mukakarera Monique who won 73 votes equaling 14.7%.

Dr Sezibera Richard, former Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) has won elections in Southern Province to replace Senator Mucyo Jean de Dieu who passed away early October 2016 after collapsing from parliamentary buildings.

Preliminary results by district and sector advisory committees indicated that Dr Sezibera Richard had 317 votes equaling 63.9% followed by the next contender Mukakarera Monique who won 73 votes equaling 14.7%.

Dr Masabo François, a lecturer at the University of Rwanda had 59 votes (11.9%) ,Mukamuganga Veneranda 28 (5.6%) while Muhimakazi Félicité received 19 votes equivalent of 3.8%.

Today the senate is comprised of 26 senators including 12 elected from all provinces countrywide and Kigali city in addition d to others representing higher institutions and universities and eight more senators appointed by President of the Republic.

According to the National Electoral Commission (NEC), next provisional results will be announced on 6th December 2016 while the new senator representing Southern Province will be declared on 13th December 2016.
