The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jan Kenneth Eliasson has said that the 1994 genocide against Tutsi tells much about UN failure at the time.
Eliasson noted this as he visited Kigali Genocide Memorial during his last visit to a foreign country before he completes his mission at the United Nations.
After being taken through the history of genocide preparation and execution, and how UN envoys in Rwanda failed to stop it, Eliasson said; “This was a great failure of United Nations.”
Jan Eliasson has told the media that it is time for international community to become counteractive on serious matters requiring special interventions.
“I have traveled to many countries and witnessed consequences of genocide against Jews. This adds to my existing ideas that we must do all possible lest such mayhem happens again,” he said.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank Rwandans who got united after the mayhem,” he added.
Jan Eliasson has said that visiting Rwanda before his term limit expires has a great value.
