Housemaid arrested for stealing Rwf 1.3million from employer

Police in Nyamasheke district has arrested one Pascasie Uwamahoro, a domestic worker for allegedly stealing Rwf 1.35million from her employer in Kigali.

The 18-year- old housemaid, a resident of Shangi sector in Nyamasheke district, allegedly stole the money on August 20, and immediately went missing.

Uwamahoro’s employer learned that his bedroom had been broken and, the money was missing when the housemaid had disappeared. He hurriedly reported to police.

The Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the western region police spokesperson confirmed the developments and added on that the suspect was arrested after a complaint lodged by her employers.

“The employer quickly called the police to file a case after investigations, it was discovered that the domestic worker had fled to her home village where she was arrested from,” he said.

CIP Kanamugire explained that the suspect’s neighbors who had heard of the theft called and confirmed her presence in the village where police also recovered part the money.

“At the time of arrest we recovered Rwf 900,000 but investigations are still ongoing to recover the remaining amount,” said CIP Kanamugire. He urged employers and the general public, to guard their valuables including money to avoid such incidents from occurring.

Police also expressed gratitude to area residents for the vigilance exhibited and for handing over the suspect to police without harm.
