IGP urges Police peacekeepers to front Rwandan values

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K Gasana has reminded commanders of contingents set to be deployed in UN missions, to front Rwandan values and serve with utmost commitment.

The Police Chief made the remarks on September 26, while officially opening a two-day seminar of the 58 commissioned officers under two contingents at the Rwanda National police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

The Officers attending the seminar are due for deployment in South Sudan and Central African Republic as Formed Police Units (FPUs).

“In every peace support operation, strategic coordination is key; you should define the mission very well, and perform as a team and keep Rwanda’s interest at heart,” IGP Gasana said.

During pre-deployment preparations, the IGP said, they should acquire enough knowledge and be well acquainted with their mandate and advance Rwanda’s values throughout their time abroad in service.

The Officers were also reminded to champion Police-Police cooperation in the UN missions, maintain team spirit with other peacekeeping and learn best practices.

“Before you depart for the mission, take time and reflect on who you are, what you stand for, understand well the concept of force protection that comprises safety and security, welfare, administration discipline, self-control and professional conduct,” said the IGP.

The officers were also urged to master standard operating procedures, communication briefings and reporting as well as event management and protocol that matches well with international policing standards.

During the two days, participants will look at UN systems, structures and organisation; management of personnel in stressful environment; command and control; force protection and response to sexual exploitation and abuse in conflict areas, among others.
