Kanombe airport to be expanded, surrounding population set to relocate

The 2016/2017 national budget has allocated Rwf 6.5 billion for expansion of Kigali International Airport and Gisenyi Airport to strengthen infrastructures.Last week on June 8th, 2016 the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Ambassador Gatete Claver presented to both chambers of the parliament the 2016/2017 national budget worth Rwf 1949.4 billion which included money reserved for expansion of the two airports.

He said that there is a need of building roads to strengthen intra and inter-regional trade and therefore committed to expanding Kigali International Airport locally known as ‘Kanombe Airport’, expanding the road leading to CIMERWA and other roads in the industrial zone in Rwamagana among others.

The renovation of Kigali International Airport will cost Rwf 3.9 billion along with Rwf 2.6 billion allocated for compensating the population living around Gisenyi Airport who will be relocated.

The Chief Engineer - Airports at Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority, Prudence Tuyishimire has told IGIHE that some of the people near Kigali International Airport will be relocated.
