Bush burning, illegal mining, cutting of trees and poor waste disposal are dangers that cause environment degradation, which should be fought.

The call was made on August 22, by the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kirehe, Supt. James Rutaremara while meeting over 400 community members in Mahama Sector.

“People deliberately burn bushes targeting the rainy season to have fresh grass for their livestock, others throw lit cigarettes while others leave the fire burning while harvesting honey and all these cause wildfire and destroy the environment,” Supt. Rutaremara, urging them to stop such illegal tendencies.

He further cautioned the people against charcoal burning and urged them to report anyone who engages in environmental related crimes.

The DPC also appealed to them to join efforts against drug trafficking.

“Drug traffickers or abusers could be a family member, friends, neighbors or even people from other places that use this as a transit route; don’t give them that a chance Mahama a criminal hub or route,” he said.

The executive secretary of Mahama sector, Adelte Hakizamungu thanked RNP for the role it plays in educating people about dangers of destroying the environment.
