As part of their effort to raise the bar high against abuse of narcotic drugs, members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Crime Prevention in Kirehe District organized a football tournament that brought all the six cells of Gahara Sector as part of their effort to combat the vice in the district.

Gahara is one of the sectors in Kirehe where drug abuse is reportedly still high, and the major transit route for drug traffickers.

The youth organization has been vital in fighting and preventing crimes through awareness in communities and schools, and supporting vulnerable groups as part of their strategies to community development.

In the football finals played on August 28, Rubimba Cell beat their counterparts of Nyakagezi to walk away with the trophy and money. The money was also contributed by the youth members.

Speaking shortly after the match, Faustin Ngarukiyinka, the coordinator of the youth group in Kirehe, said that the tournament was organized at the district level and would continue to all other sectors.

“We want the message to be heard across the district through football; it is a sport that is loved by the majority youth, and this is the generation that is mainly involved in drug related crimes, and we use this opportunity in partnership with police, to sensitize them on dangers of drug abuse and their role in fighting them through community policing,” Ngarukiyinka said.

Inspector of Police (IP) Gahigi Harerimana, the District Community Liaison Officer of Kirehe, while addressing hundreds of youth, urged them to be agents of change, with the main focus on fighting use, sell and trafficking of illicit drugs.

“We can do much when we put our efforts together, exchange information on those who involve in activities that affect your safety and security like drug dealers and abusers; you hold a strong part in this course,” IP Gahigi said.

He thanked the youth volunteers for setting an example to organize the tournament and appealed to the young generation to join the group and be part of the country’s transformation in all aspects, including security.
