A man identified as Niyitegeka Saidi is detained at Gikondo police station in Kicukiro district over alleged contemplated murder by burning to death his paternal step sister, Itangishaka Monique.
Niyitegeka was arrested on Tuesday after residents suspected and reported him to be the mastermind behind burning a house located in Kanserege cell in Gikondo sector in which his sister Itangishaka Monique lived.
The house caught fire at around 3:30 hours on October 25th, 2016.
The police spokesperson in Kigali, Spt Hitayezu Emmanuel has confirmed to IGIHE of Niyitegeka’s arrest.
“After receiving information, we rushed to the scene to investigate the incident of the burnt house. We immediately visited two people who lived in it at CHUK where we found them in critical health conditions,” he said.
Itangishaka died at CHUK hospital yesterday while the other fire victim is still getting medical assistance.
Spt Hitayezu explained that they have arrested Saidi after receiving information suspecting him to be the mastermind of the fire.
He confirmed that Saidi’s child was living with Itangishaka but the child was not inside the house at the time it caught fire.
If convicted of murder crime, Saidi shall be liable to life sentence as per article 140 of Rwanda’s penal code.
