Police in Gasabo District is holding a 29-year old man identified as Theogene Mungwakuzwe, who was arrested on October in connection with stealing Rwf400, 000, US$800 and airtime cards worth 15,000 at a vigil in Kimironko Sector.
All the money and top-up cards were also recovered from the suspect, who was arrested later that evening.
Police Spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, said: “During a vigil in Bibare Cell of Kimironko Sector, Mungwakuzwe allegedly pretended to be heading to the washroom and instead entered one of the bedrooms where he stole the money.”
He added that the suspect was noticed by a child, who raised alarm that attracted people, who pursued and caught him before calling the police to take over the case.
The spokesperson appealed to the public to always be conscious whenever they host guests in their homes and ensure that their belonging are safe, adding that there are some people that would use such sorrowful moments to orchestrate evil.
Article 300 of the penal code stipulates that any person who commits theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
