President Paul Kagame has requested the organizers of National Itorero, Indangamirwa, to initiate a section of training in military exercises and skills to Rwandan students in foreign universities, those preparing to study abroad and or joining local universities.

President Kagame made the request yesterday as he closed the National Itorero of ‘Indangamirwa’ attended by 345 youth in Gabiro, Gatsibo district.

President Kagame said that the next Indangamirwa National Itorero will involve military exercises for all students who previously completed Indangamirwa National Itorero.

“Next time we will bring together all those who trained here from the first up to the 9th intakes and take them to another level. We will train less in other courses and more in military exercises including handling guns, self defense,” he said.

The president that bringing together excellent trainees under the Indangamirwa National Itorero of whom the majority are from abroad is meant to acquaint them with basic self defense skills in case they are faced with threats in host regions.

“We are worried of students living abroad where there is insecurity and it is the best opportunity of helping trainees learn more about culture,” he said.

Indangamirwa National Itorero was launched in 2008 with the aim of equipping Rwandan students living abroad with Rwanda national values, traditions and history. It is organized by the National Itorero Commission in partnership with the Ministry of Education.

The chairman of National Itorero Commission, Boniface Rucagu said that it has helped Rwanda’s youth to better understand the role of moral values and taboos of Rwandan culture in building the nation, know their responsibilities in Rwanda’s development as well as maintaining attained achievements.
