Police in Musanze District is holding three women after they were arrested Wednesday apparently smuggling goods and trafficking banned contrabands.
Diane Uwineza, Solange Nyiramagaju and Chantal Nyiranzira were intercepted in Musanze Sector with 291 pieces of cooking oil in varied quantities, 1700 pieces of match-box and 264 packets of varied brands of illicit gin.
They are currently detained at detained at Muhoza Police station.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean Claude Kabandana, the District Police Commander of Musanze, said that the trio is part of a ring of residents involved in smuggling and trafficking illicit gin such as Sky Blue, Kitoko, Kanyanga and other contrabands parked in banned polythene bags.
“We are aware of these malpractices, although they are very few compared to the past; but we continue with community policing activities like public awareness, information sharing and operations, all which identify individuals involved and routes used. This informs the best course of action and subsequent arrest,” CIP Kabandana said.
He commended the role that the residents play in crime detection and prevention through information sharing adding that “we are much involved into sensitization to minimize criminality.”
