Nkombo residents lament distant medical facilities

Residents of Nkombo Island in Lake Kivu, Rusizi district, have lamented the long distance they have to trek to access Gihundwe Health Center making the consumption of medical services difficult.

The 17,836 Nkombo residents face hurdles in accessing Gihundwe Health Center at times resulting into still births.

Nyiramiruho Venantie, a 65 year old woman living in Mbuga village, Kamagimbo cell of Nkombo sector who talked to IGIHE on her way to Gihundwe said they experience hardships of especially transport to the site.

Nyirabwimana Justine ,a resident of Kabuye village of Kamagimbo said they first make three journey legs including carrying the patient on shoulders ,in boat and using bus transport when they reach the beach of the lake.

She also explained that some women give birth and others die along the way.

The Rusizi district officer in charge of health, Gatera Egide has told IGIHE that they were not fully aware of people lacking means of reaching Gihundwe hospital.

“We didn’t know it but we are going to address it,” he said.
