The Muslim community in Nyabihu District have been called upon to preach and join efforts against crimes to promote safety and security.
Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Pierre Karegeya made the call during a meeting with Muslim leaders and representatives in Nyabihu, which focused on strengthening partnership in community policing and raising awareness against radicalization in particular.
It was also attended by Sheikh Hamad Iyakaremye of the Western Province.
“As the world continues to evolve in development so are crimes, and fighting them requires strong and practical partnership at all levels including faith-based groups,” said IP Karegeya.
“As exemplary leaders in your respective mosques, you should be the voice of change and crime prevention in particular.
Development means having focused people, protecting and building on what has been achieved,” he added.
Sheikh Iyakaremye appealed to participants to be characterized by the spirit of patriotism, be part of community policing and development adding that these are intended for their followers as well.
“We shouldn’t give room for anything that can tarnish the image of Islamic faith,” he noted.
Participants recommitted to strengthen their partnership with the police in raising awareness against crimes in their respective areas.
