Bonaventure Uwamahoro has been elected the new Nyamagabe District Mayor replacing Philbert Mugisha who was suspended by the district council in November last year.

Uwamahoro was elected by District and Sectors’ council committees after he had been elected to represent Kamegeri sector in the district council on February 3rd.

He got 324 votes against his competitor Marie Louise Mujawayezu who got 13 votes of the total 337 voters.

Prior to new responsibilities, Uwamahoro has been the Director of Planning, Reform and Capacity Building Unit at the Ministry of Labour and Public Service (MIFOTRA).

His predecessor Mugisha was sacked days after he was arrested allegedly for embezzlement and awarding public tenders illegally. However, in December last year, the court released him after establishing that he was innocent.

The 40-year-old Uwamahoro holds a masters’ degree in developmental studies from Switzerland.
