A senior six student who was sitting national examinations in Nyamagabe district, Gasiga Désiré, 19, drowned in a pond. He along with colleagues escaped from their school ‘Notre Dame de la Paix Cyanika’ to go swimming. The deceased was a student of Computer Science.

Gasiga from Ruhango district drowned in a pond located in Kabarera village, Ngoma cell of Cyanika sector in Nyamagabe district yesterday evening.

The executive secretary of Cyanika sector, Ndorimana Jean Chrysostome has told IGIHE that the deceased was with other students.

“Nine students escaped the school and called the deceased to accompany them. They went and swam in a pond where the deceased drowned His mates informed us one hour later. We informed the police but efforts to retrieve the body remained futile,” he said.

Ndorimana explained that residents stayed at the pond the whole night till they saw the body around 6:00 in the morning and took it to Kigeme hospital.

“The pond has clean water and is deep. It was formed in a crater where a Chinese company extracted stones to use in building Kitabi-Nyungwe road. After completing road construction, the Chinese company left without covering the crater where they extracted stones. We are too worried as leaders,” he said.

Ndorimana said that the matter was reported to Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) through Nyamagabe district and are waiting for response.

He said that another primary student drowned in the same pond last year.

Following the incident leaders have delegated a patrol unit at the pond to prevent more people from using it.
