Police in Nyarugenge District is holding two men in connection with conning an unsuspecting man of Rwf495.000.
Police identified the suspects Thierry Sindikubwabo and Jean Siborurema, who were arrested recently in Nyabugogo.
The victim had just withdrawn the money from the bank at a branch in Nyabugogo.
According to the central region police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP), Emmanuel Hitayezu the duo, apparently trailed the victim right from the time he came put of the bank.
“We have since established that the suspects cornered the man and confused him with different stories and in the process, they removed money from his bag and refilled it with pieces of soap and grass,” said the spokesperson.
“However, there was a resident nearby, who saw everything and hurriedly informed police officers in Nyabugogo, who also quickly intervened, arrested the two men and recovered all the money from them.”
SP Hitayezu appealed to the general public to beware of such individuals who use several tricks to con them of their hard-earned money.
He appealed to the general public to always take precautions to protect their money and the banking tools in general.
Conning is punishable under article 318 of the Rwandan penal code, which stipulates that “anyone, who obtains the property of another person by fraud or by using false names or qualities, to give rise to hope or fear of harm and obtains a part or whole of a fortune shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of between Rwf3 million to Rwf5 million.
SP Hitayezu urged the public to always call Police on 112, 0788311152, 0788311829 or 0788311164 whenever they encounter or witness such criminal acts.
