Pasteur Bizimungu building catches fire

Part of Pasteur Bizimungu’s building located in Kamuhina cell of Kimihurura sector near The Netherlands embassy has caught fire. It is said that the incident occurred as plumbers fixed a system in the building.

Among the destroyed is a store of International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC).
The fire broke out at around 9:30 hours. Librairie Ikirezi, housed in the building was not affected. Police swiftly swung into action to contain the fire.

Pasteur Bizimungu was the president of Rwanda during the transitional period from 1994 to March 23, 2000.

He has told IGIHE that the incident is regrettable but commended police for instant response.

“We have been surprised by the fire incident. Police have immediately intervened with five fire extinguishing,” he said.

The police spokesperson in Kigali, Supt. Hitayezu Emmanuel has said that they rushed to intervene as soon as they heard of the incident adding that investigations to establish the cause of the fire are underway.They suspected plumbers to have caused a short circuit.

Between Rwf 30 and 40 million worth of property are estimated to have been destroyed by the inferno.
