Unidentified soldier wearing the uniform of Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) shot dead at the border of DRC and Rwanda by a Rwandan soldier on Patrol last night.
The acting spokesperson of Rwanda Defense Forces, Lt.Col.Rene Ngendahimana has confirmed the incident.
In an interview with IGIHE he has said “The incident took place around the border over a person who came approaching a Rwandan soldier who was on patrol around 8:00 pm. It was dark when a Rwandan soldier stopped the person, asked who the person is and didn’t reply but continued to approach him. As the person came closer, the Rwandan soldier noted he was wearing military uniform.”
“Realizing that the man continued to approach him, he decided to shoot him as self defense since he didn’t know what the stranger held in hand whether it is a grenade or another lethal object,” he said.
In the recent past, FDLR rebel outfit have been carrying out but raids on Rwanda’s land but repelled on all occasions. In some cases Congolese soldiers were also reported to have stormed Rwanda’s border.
It is not clear whether the person shot dead was a Congolese soldier or from other rebel groups based in Congo since he carried no identifications.
East Africa Joint Verification Mechanism has started an investigation.They have gone to investigate DRC side to identify whether the killed person is Congolese soldier or not, said RDF spokesperson.
