The spokesperson of Rwanda Defense Forces, Lt. Col. René Ngendahimana has scorned at reports from Burundi that the Rwanda government is responsible for plotting an assassination attempt on Burundi’s Willy Nyamitwe, President Pierre Nkurunziza’s media adviser and chief spokesman near his home in the Kajaga area outside the capital, Bujumbura, on Monday, saying Burundi should make such wild allegations backed with empirical evidence, as Rwanda has nothing, whatsoever, to gain from the death of the said Nyamitwe.
Ngendahimana has told IGIHE that Rwanda got wind of such rumours in the media.
“We also received such information from the media. They should release evidences proving that Rwandan soldier or Rwanda is behind the attack. Indeed they should identify who is that soldier since all Rwandan soldiers have identifications,“he said.
“People should also note that it is not Rwanda’s target to kill other countries’ officials. Rwanda can’t reap any benefit from seeing Nyamitwe dead; he poses no threat that Rwanda can only feel secured if he is dead,” he added.
Rwanda is in the process of relocating Burundi refugees accommodated in Rwanda following Burundi’s behavior towards Rwanda’s hospitality where it accused the country of fuelling chaos in Burundi.
Burundi accuses Rwanda of hosting army officers who plotted a coup against Mr Nkurunziza in May 2015 after he announced he was running for a third presidential term, allegations which the government of Rwanda refuted.
More than 500 people have died and at least 270,000 have fled the conflict in Burundi.
Burundi police spokesman Pierre Nkurukiye has made a wild allegation that instructions were sent from Rwanda to renegades in the Burundian military to kill Willy Nyamitwe.
A Burundian colonel and two corporals have been arrested, he added.
