The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) has started introducing cooking gas that will replace firewood in refugee camps.

The pilot phase has been conducted in Nyarushishi and Kijote refugee camps in Nyabihu District. The opening ceremony took place in Nyarushishi camp in Nkungu Sector of Rusizi district on Friday.

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs , Jeanne d’Arc Debonheur said that beside environment conservation, the exercise will reduce money spent on buying firewood and invest it in other development activities.

"It was observed that we used to spend much money in buying firewood, affecting other development activities. It also affects our forest cover, breeding erosion and other disasters which leave lives and environment susceptible to destruction," she said.

She said it has been taking Rwf900 million every year to buy firewood, but now it will take a half of the budget and the rest will go in development activities.
