Prisoners from Nyarugenge prison known as 1930 will be relocated to Mageragere, a newly constructed facility.
Construction of Mageragere prison is underway with six hundred inmates from across the country building the facility.
The Minister of Internal Security, Mussa Fazil Harerimana has said that inmates from Nyarugenge prison will be relocated within two months.
He said this yesterday after inspecting the activities at the new Mageragere prison along with Rwanda Correction Service officials.
“The prison will accommodate 3000 inmates from Nyarugenge prison. All that remains is roofing. Inmates may be relocated within two months,” he said.
The first phase will accommodate Nyarugenge inmates while from the secomd will take in Gasabo prison inmates. Prisoners are digging the foundation of the second phase.
Minister Harerimana commended the momentum in construction activities and infrastructures including a road and electricity connection.
Volleyball, football and handball pitches will be built at the Mageragere facility along with a chapel.
