The Mayor of Rubavu District, Sinamenye Jeremie is under arrest for having violated the rights of campaigning teams, during the ongoing Presidential campaigns.
This follows the independent candidate Phillippe Mpayimana who was campaigning in Rubavu District, on 20th July 2017 who complained that he failed to get the audience listen to his manifesto in some of the Sectors, which is allegedly attributed to grass roots leadership and one of them was in Rubavu district.
Rwanda Police Spokesperson, ACP Theos Badege has disclosed that the rights of campaigners are equal, and they must be upheld, failure of which is a crime punishable by the law.
ACP Theos Badege has echoed that the acts of inconveniencing some of the candidates’ campaigns will not be tolerated. Preliminary investigations reveal, it occurred in Rubavu District in the Sectors of, Nyamyumba and Kanama in Nyaruguru District, Busanza Sector in Nyagatare District and Nyagatare in Rwimiyaga as well as Kirehe District in the Sector of Gahara.
He said,” For the police to see tha the laws are adhered to, it has apprehended and arrested three local leaders suspected of violating the campaign rules, for some of the Presidential candidates; these are: the Mayor of Rubavu, and one of the staff on a district level, and the Executive Secretary of Busanza Sector in Nyaruguru District.”
“We want to send a clear message that every person especially leaders from various sectors, and everywhere help to enforce these laws and directives which are guidelines to elections and campaigns, thus giving all the candidates the same opportunities, as required by the law.”
He pointed out that life has to continue as usual; workers in government institutions, commercial activities, which are highly needed while people are traveling to or from campaign trails.
