Rutsiro lightening kills two

Thunder yesterday evening struck three children in Musasa sector of Rutsiro district of Eastern Province leaving two brothers dead and one injured as they were fetching water at a river crossing Musasa sector.
The deceased are two brothers aged seven and thirteen along with a ten-year old child who was injured.
IGIHE has learnt that the three children hit by thunder were rushed to Murunda Hospital where two died on arrival while one of them is getting medical attention.

Thunder yesterday evening struck three children in Musasa sector of Rutsiro district of Eastern Province leaving two brothers dead and one injured as they were fetching water at a river crossing Musasa sector.

The deceased are two brothers aged seven and thirteen along with a ten-year old child who was injured.

IGIHE has learnt that the three children hit by thunder were rushed to Murunda Hospital where two died on arrival while one of them is getting medical attention.
The mayor of Rutsiro district, Ayinkamiye Emerance has told IGIHE that research is underway to establish the cause of reoccurrence lightening in the region.

“Investigations are being undertaken to identify the cause of reoccurrence of lightening. Some say it is caused by high mountains while others say it is caused by minerals present in our region. However we are waiting for outcomes of last year’s research,” she said.

She asked residents to avoid exposing themselves to susceptibility by hiding under trees and approaching ponds as it rains.

Last year, lightening killed 12 people in Rutsiro district.
