Smuggled liquor including wines and spirits, have been intercepted in the Western districts of Nyabihu and Ngororero where four people were arrested in separate operations in connection with the illegal business.
The suspects were arrested on September 14 in as they traveled in public vehicles en route from Rubavu District.
The intercepted smuggled goods include 55 bottles of Novida, an energy drink, bottles of Red Label and Black Label and bundles of a traditional wear –Kitenge.
All the seized goods have been handed over to the Revenue Protection Unit (RPU) in Rubavu, according to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, Police spokesperson for the Western Province.
“It has now become a tradition for people either in public vehicles or in communities around the borderlines, informing the police of irregularities including smugglers and drug dealers, and this has immensely facilitated police operations in combating such unlawful and criminal businesses,” CIP Kanamugire said.
“Smuggling itself is a crime and punishable by the law because of the threats it poses on the national economy in terms of evaded taxes, its impact on local genuine business and the likelihood of bringing substandard and harmful products; we called upon the general public to leave no room for such malpractices and to continue with the spirit of partnership to break smuggling chains,” he added.
