Students urged to uphold principles of community policing during holidays

District Police Units (DPUs) have enhanced their community policing campaigns in schools as part of the anti-crime package for the students before they break off for holidays this Friday.

On July 18, the DPUs on Ngororero and Nyanza engaged the students in various schools and urged them to “stay focused and stay out of trouble” during their holidays.

In Ngororero, the District Police Commander, Senior Supt. Marc Gasangwa headed the anti-crime awareness campaign in EAV Kivumu and ES Nyange where he urged over 800 students and their teachers in the two schools to uphold the principles of community policing during their holidays.

“There has been an improved partnership between police and students in terms of anti-crime awareness, prevention and timely information sharing on unlawful acts and these principles should continue to define you even during your holidays,” SSP Gasangwa said.

He reminded the students that drug abuse, domestic and gender based violence, and child abuse are still of major concern in communities and urged them to be the voice of change by reporting related incidences to give way for effective response.

He appealed to members of anti-crime clubs in these schools to carry on with their “commendable community policing work.”

Human trafficking, abstaining from sex to prevent unwanted pregnancies and HIV infections are among other issues that transpired during the meeting.

Similar messages were also echoed in Nyanza District where over 450 students of EAV Mayaga were called upon to desist any attempts from their peers who could be involved in drug related crimes, embrace and join hands with their colleagues in Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing to put ideas and strength together for the common course.
