Police in Nyamagabe District have arrested two men in connection with impersonating police officers and soliciting money from some people promising to release their relatives and friends in police custody over varied offences.

The suspects identified as Alphonse Nzihangana alias Abadro and Simeon Nshimiyimana alias Japhet were arrested recently in a police targeted operation.

According to the Southern Region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Andre Hakizimana, the duo masqueraded as police officers to hoodwink people into believing that they had the authority to release someone from custody.

"Gasaka Police Station had recorded several complaints relating to the two men; we investigated them and indeed we arrested them as they were soliciting money from another unsuspecting victim," he said.

"One of the victims who filed a complaint availed details relating the whereabouts of the suspects...preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects used 0785195030 to call the victims, and asked them to send money on the Tigo cash accounts 0723810427 and 0726629632 claiming they would release their relatives from custody," the regional spokesperson said.

At the time of their arrest, the duo had conned at least 12 people of Rwf524, 150.
CIP Hakizimana advised the public to refrain from seeking for illegal services.

“Everyone in police custody is arrested for reasons well defined and known. You don’t want to be arrested you don’t commit a crime. If you commit a crime be ready to face the consequences because any illegal attempt to escape justice amounts to another crime.”

The two suspects risk a jail sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to Rwf10 million as stipulated by articles 348 and 318 of the penal code.
