A traditional healer, Sebakungu Damascène, 62, in Karengera sector of Nyamasheke district, has been arrested over a secondary school student who died while under his custody.
The late, Habimpano Samuel, 15, died on Monday at the home of Sebakungu where he had gone to be traditionally healed of poison related sickness. He was a senior one student of Groupe Scolaire Karengera.
The executive secretary of Karengera sector, Mutuyimana Gabriel, has told IGIHE that the child died at the home of Sebakungu where his parents had taken him for traditional treatment.
“It is true that the child died at his home and the traditional healer is under custody,” he said.
He explained that the child had received drugs from a health center but parents decided to take him to the traditional healer, suspecting to have been poisoned.
He appealed on residents to seek medical attention from health centers when they fall sick other than relying on traditional healers.
The child was buried on Tuesday after an autopsy at Bushenge hospital.
Sebakungu is detained at Ntendezi police station as investigations are get underway.
