Police in Musanze District is holding two people in connection with attempting to bribe police officers on duty.
Vedaste Sebera and Faustin Mujyanama were arrested separately on September 22 as they allegedly attempted to seduce police officers on duty with a bribe of Rwf5, 000 and Rwf3, 000 respectively.
This was after they had been stopped over road traffic related offences.
According to the Northern Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, Sebera attempted to bribe an officer after he was found driving a Toyota Hiace, plate number RAB 178A without a mechanical inspection certificate.
He went on to add that, Mujyanama, a commercial motorcyclist with a motorcycle bearing plate number RB 419L attempted to bribe an officer after he was found without insurance.
IP Gasasira cautioned road users, especially drivers against such malpractices and warned of severe consequences to anyone who will be caught in such bribery tendencies.
“By attempting to bribe officers, you will be adding an offence to another which you will be answerable as well. Fighting corruption is among the Rwanda National Police priorities and a day-to-day duty of the officers,” he said.
The IP Gasasira added that RNP adopted a zero tolerance policy toward corruption, so, the public should know that corruption has room in Rwanda.
Penalties for anyone convicted of corruption range between two and seven years and a fine of up to ten times the value of illegal benefit demanded as stipulated under article 641 of the penal code.
