Two people, a mother and her child yesterday drowned in Lake Burera after the canoe in which they were traveling capsized as they were returning to their village from Rusumo market.

The dead have been identified as Uwiduhaye Joselyne and her 5-month old baby.

IGIHE has learnt that the canoe which carried nine people with their luggage succumbed to strong storms before docking. Seven of them survived.

The police spokesperson in Northern Province, IP Gasasira Innocent has told IGIHE that the boat carried nine residents of Ndango cell who were returning from Rusumo market in Butaro sector.

He said that life could be saved if passengers had life-jackets.

“The incident took place yesterday around 15:00 hours. They made a mistake of not wearing life-jackets,” said IP Gasasira.
