President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame began a two-day visit in Botswana yesterday at the invitation of President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi. The visit aims at strengthening bilateral ties.
On the first day of the visit, the First Lady visited Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence.
The facility offers treatment and care, free of charge, to HIV infected children, adolescents, young adults and their families across Botswana.
Following her tour of the Botswana-Baylor Centre, she visited the Adolescent Centre’s library and computer labs and had an opportunity to engage with young people receiving treatment and care at the Centre.
The Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Center of Excellence was opened and officially dedicated by His Excellency Mr. Festus Mogae, President of the Republic of Botswana, on June 20, 2003.
The facility, the first of its kind on the African continent, provides and supervises state-of-the-art care and treatment for more than 4,000 HIV-infected children and families from around Botswana, both at the center and through its decentralized clinical mentoring program.
Staffed by Botswana and U.S. health professionals, the center of excellence provides primary and specialty medical care and social services for HIV-infected infants, children and their families.
The center’s vision is to improve wellbeing of HIV/AIDS infected children to live longer.
The latter aligns with Mrs. Kagame activities who was recently named UNAIDS Special Ambassador in recognition of her work in fighting HIV/AIDS and promoting the health and well-being of adolescents.
It is an honor she was bestowed upon by UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé, on December 7th, 2018 during the presentation on the vision and status of global HIV response by Michel Sidibe and UN Undersecretary-General at the Kigali Convention Centre.
Mrs. Jeannette Kagame was the first to receive this responsibility given in recognition of her role in improving lives.
Following the tour, President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame attended a State Banquet hosted in their honour by President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi and First Lady Neo Masisi.
