Umusingi Editor Sentenced to One Year in Prison

Stanley Gatera, Editor of Umusingi tabloid has been sentenced to one year in Prison and will pay a fine of Rwf 100 000.
Gasabo court concluded that Gatera was found guilty of divisionism and gender discrimination based on the opinion published in his paper.
Court also argued that since it was the first time Gatera had committed such a crime, his punishment was reduced to one year in prison.
Normally his crime attracts a sentence ranging between 5 years and 7 years and fines ranging (…)

Court also argued that since it was the first time Gatera had committed such a crime, his punishment was reduced to one year in prison.

Normally his crime attracts a sentence ranging between 5 years and 7 years and fines ranging between Rwf 100 000 and Rwf 1,000,000.

Gatera will also pay Rwf 31,850 to cover expenses court incurred during his trial.

However, Speaking to IGIHE journalist, Gatera said he will appeal the case.
