The incident happened on Monday 2nd May 2022 in Bigabiro Village, Remera Cell of Boneza Sector when a boat that carried 33 passengers including 13 men and 20 women was hit by wave and capsized.
Etienne Havugimana, the Vice Mayor of Rutsiro District in charge of economic development has confirmed the incident noting that three passengers have gone missing.
“The accident occurred around 2:00 p.m. when a boat carrying 33 passengers to Bugarura Island was blown by strong wind. Besides, passengers had no life jackets and the boat doesn’t meet requirements to carry people,” he said.
Those who went missing are being searched in collaboration with security officials.
Survivors are also getting treatment at Boneza Health Center while those in critical condition have been transferred to Murunda Hospital.
Similar accident in the same area took place in August 2021 and claimed lives of two women.
