A destructive fire has broken out at the Ecobank headquarte located in Kigali’s Nyarugenge District. On the fateful Wednesday of October 24, 2023, the flames swiftly consumed the top three floors of the building, providing a frightening spectacle for those watching from Makuza Peace Plaza. Despite the ominous billows of thick smoke, the fire remained hidden from view outside.

The situation demanded swift action, and the police forces’ rapid response facilitated immediate rescue efforts. Collaborating closely with on-site staff, they worked tirelessly to evacuate valuable assets.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene reported that the fire originated on the ninth floor, which, incidentally, constituted the building’s apex. Inhabitants of this floor detected smoke emerging from the ceiling, prompting them to evacuate promptly, clutching whatever they could salvage.

The exact causes of this incident remain unknown at this time. It is worth noting that the affected floors were primarily occupied by tenants.

In the aftermath of this unfortunate event, Ecobank had no choice but to temporarily halt its operations. Simultaneously, the bank redirected its customers to alternative branches to ensure their financial needs were met.

As authorities continue to piece together the puzzle surrounding the fire’s origin, they also work diligently to assess the extent of the damage incurred.
