Initially, when the UK Government entered into an agreement with Rwanda in April 2022, it was stipulated that migrants with pending immigration cases in London would be relocated to Kigali.
Under this arrangement, a migrant would reside in Rwanda while applying for the right to live in the UK. If granted, they would move to London; if denied, they would either stay in Kigali or move to another country.
Sky News reports that Minister Cleverly announced an updated agreement between the two governments in December 2023.
Under this new agreement, migrants who have already been denied the right to stay in the UK will also be sent to Rwanda and will receive support for five years.
He stated, “Those without the right to remain in the UK will not be allowed to stay. We have a safe third country ready to welcome them and help them rebuild their lives.”
The support provided to these migrants will include free education, job training, employment opportunities, and accommodation for the five-year period of the agreement.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that the first migrants will be sent to Rwanda in July 2024, and approximately 500 individuals have been trained to assist them.
