The incident happened on 26th December 2022 around 16h:50. It is said that the young men were extracting minerals in unlicensed mining site.

Sources reveal that the deceased are identified as Donat Irafasha,18, and Noel Ntakirutima, 28. Following the incident, their bodies were taken to Byumba Hospital for postmortem.

The executive secretary of Ruvune Sector, Oscar Beningoma has disclosed that the young men were extracting minerals from a pit nearby the home of a resident who immediately escaped.

“The deceased died while trying to excavate minerals from a toilet-like pit located in banana plantation surrounding a resident’s home,” he said.
