Reports indicate that Mapendo was driving under the influence of alcohol when his car veered from the right side of the road to the left, tragically striking ten individuals, predominantly children. This devastating event resulted in the loss of a 6-year-old’s life, and several others sustained injuries.
Rwanda Police spokesperson, ACP Boniface Rutikanga, informed IGIHE that swift action was taken, with Mapendo’s arrest and the injured individuals promptly transported to health facilities for treatment. Rutikanga underscored the crucial importance of adhering to the National Police’s advice against driving under the influence, citing the potential for accidents and loss of life.
In a stern message, ACP Rutikanga warned of severe consequences for those found driving under the influence of alcohol. He urged the public to acknowledge and abide by the law, emphasizing the strict prohibition of driving under the influence.
Rutikanga emphasized the real-life consequences of such actions, highlighting the tragic loss of a child, numerous injuries, and the potential separation of families due to imprisonment.
As Mapendo awaits justice in confinement within Gasabo District, ACP Rutikanga reiterated the legal repercussions individuals face when caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
