The cows were handed over to owners on Sunday 1st May 2022 as members of Nyagatare District Advisory Council visited residents of Rukomo Sector.
Beneficiaries are from the sectors of Nyagatare, Mimuri, Rukomo and Mukama.
After the handover of donations; the delighted John Sentama,75,residing in Nyagatare Sector revealed that he last owned a cow before the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
“I am going to take good care of this cow so that it can be milked for the family and help me live decently in my advanced ages. I have been upset because I was dispossessed of my cows but I am now thankful for this donation,” he said.
Sentama also disclosed that the cow will help him to get compost to increase agricultural yields.
Isaac Rutaganira, a resident of Rukomo Sector thanked the Government of Rwanda for taking care of survivors of Genocide against Tutsi noting that he will no longer struggle to get milk.
“We used to buy a liter of milk at Rwf300 per liter. It was not easy to afford the money every day. We are thankful for received cow to be milked for the family. It will give us courage to focus on other household needs,” he said.
The President of Nyagatare District Advisory Council, Godfrey Kabagambe revealed that the donation is part of the committee’s initiatives to donate to survivors of Genocide against Tutsi every year in collaboration with members of the Private Sector.
The Mayor of Nyagatare District, Stephen Gasana has underscored that they will be identifying residents with most pressing needs to be supported within available means, along the resilience journey.
These cows were donated by farmer’s rice cooperative known as CODERVAM operating in the sectors of Rukomo, Mimuri and Nyagatare.
