Leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and their counterparts from Rwanda are expected to hold talks in Angola on Thursday this week with a view to de-escalate tensions between both countries.

The meeting was initially scheduled to take place on Monday 21st November 2022 but has been postponed to Thursday.

The East African has reported that Angolan President, João Lourenço will be the mediator between both sides.

An official statement by the Government of Angola indicates that the meeting is aimed at de-escalating tensions between the two neighbouring countries generated by the resurgence of the M23 rebel group in an ongoing fighting with Congolese Army.

DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting the rebel group, a claim which Rwanda repeatedly denied but condemned the neighbouring country of working with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

FDLR is a terrorist group formed by individuals responsible for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

President Paul Kagame; his counterpart of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi and Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye who also serves as the current Chairman of the East African Community (EAC) are expected to attend the meeting.

Kenya’s former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who serves as the EAC facilitator of the Nairobi peace process for DRC, will also be in attendance.

Heads of State from Angola, Rwanda and DRC will meet in Angola on Thursday.
