Singer M1 arrested over alleged drug abuse

Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested artiste Joseph Olivier Nzamwita known for stage name as M1 over alleged drug abuse.

He was arrested along with Claude Uwimana,25, on Thursday 21st October 2021 in Kiruhura village, Niboye cell of Niboye sector in Kicukiro district.

Speaking to IGIHE, the Spokesperson of RIB, Dr. Thierry B. Murangira has confirmed that the artiste is detained.

“The suspects are detained at Kicukiro RIB Post as investigation is underway to file their case to the Prosecution,” he said.

Dr. Murangira advised the general public against drug abuse noting that whoever fails to stand against such vice will face the law.

“RIB reminds all Rwandans residents that anyone caught abusing or trafficking any sorts of drugs will not be tolerated. We particularly request artistes to mirror virtues to their fans in the society. Thee crime is punishable by laws,” he said.

M1 and Uwimana face charges including trafficking and inhaling cannabis.

Cannabis alongside heroin, cocaine and opium are classified as "very severe drugs" under the Ministerial order nº 001/MoH/2019 of 04/03/2019 establishing the list of narcotic drugs and their categorisation.

Anyone convicted for dealing in "very severe narcotic drugs" under article 263 of the law determining offences and penalties in general faces between 20 years and life imprisonment, and a fine of between Rwf20 million and to Rwf30 million.

Joseph Olivier Nzamwita known for stage name as M1 has been arrested over alleged drug abuse.
