Stolen motorcycle recovered in Gatsibo

A motorcycle, which was reported stolen on Tuesday, August 23, in Gatsibo District, Muhura Sector, Taba Cell in Cyoga I Village, has been recovered.

The motorcycle TVS Victor RD 763M, was recovered from the suspected thief identified as Gilbert Hakizimana, 43, who was arrested later that day.

"Hakizimana was apprehended red-handed at about 6p.m, riding the stolen motorcycle in Kibumba Village, Rwimitereri Cell, Murambi Sector," Superintendent of Police (SP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.

The suspect had approached the victim in Muhura Sector, Taba Cell in Cyoga I Village pretending to be looking for a motorcycle to buy.

"Hakizimana made the victim believe that he was looking for a motorcycle to buy. This prompted the victim to put his motorcycle up for sale, and they agreed Rwf680,000.

Hakizimana tricked the motorcycle owner that he was going for a road check before buying but he never returned, prompting the victim to report the alleged theft to the Police. The suspect was located and arrested later at about 6p.m with the motorcycle," SP Twizeyimana said.

Hakizimana was at the time heading to his home village of Kanyegero, Ryamanyoni cell, Murundi Sector of Kayonza District.

He has since been handed over to RIB at Murambi station for further investigations.

Article 166 of law determining offences and penalties in general states that; any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than two years and a fine of not less than Rwf1 million and not more than Rwf2 million, community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.
