President Paul Kagame has addressed opinion leaders from Northern and Western provinces, urging them to use their influence positively within their communities instead of fostering negative actions. He conveyed the message during a gathering of over 700 opinion leaders in Musanze District on August 25.

The meeting centered on discussions about recent incidents of sectarianism in the region. Kagame criticized local leaders for not taking action against this harmful trend, even noting that some officials were involved in these activities.

One notable incident was the installation of the ’Abakono’ clan chief on July 9 in Kinigi Sector, Musanze District. This event revealed cases of divisionism, and Kagame expressed astonishment that such situations could develop without intervention.

An investigation exposed serious misconduct, including the improper awarding of contracts to businessman Justin Kazoza, who had briefly held the position of the ’Abakono’ clan leader.

Kagame reminded the attendees about the devastating consequences of divisionism, as evidenced by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He stressed the importance of unity and pledged to uphold the country’s hard-earned harmony, emphasizing that it is everyone’s responsibility to report divisive behaviors.

While acknowledging the progress in Musanze’s development, Kagame highlighted that even greater achievements could be realized through unity. Local leaders at the meeting committed to opposing sectarianism, recognizing its detrimental impact on development.
