Virunga National Park ranger shots colleague dead

In a shocking incident on the morning of Wednesday, November 15, 2023, a park ranger in Virunga National Park, Nyabihu District, shot and killed his colleague in Jenda Sector. Prosper Uwingeli, the Manager of Virunga National Park, confirmed the tragic event, stating that the motive behind the shooting is yet to be determined.

Uwingeli informed IGIHE that the incident occurred in Jenda Sector of Nyabihu District. The suspect has been apprehended and is currently under investigation.

ACP Bonface Rutikanga, the Rwanda National Police Spokesperson, corroborated the incident, expressing uncertainty about the cause of the shooting between colleagues who had worked together for seven years.

While the suspect claimed the shooting was accidental, ACP Rutikanga emphasized that the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) will conduct a thorough investigation to establish the true nature of the incident.

He urged park rangers to exercise caution in adhering to safety protocols when using and handling firearms, and utilize their weapons solely for the purpose of protecting the park and combating poaching.
