He made the disclosure last week as he officiated the pass out of 444 prison warders who completed courses at Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) Training School in Rwamagana.
Minister Gasana urged the new prison warders to discharge their duties with professionalism and model good conduct among the youth given that they constitute the majority of inmates in Rwanda.
The Spokesperson of RCS, SSP Pelly Gakwaya Uwera said that it is unfortunate to see the youth making up a large number of inmates and reminded parents not to be complacent on their responsibilities to raise children with good manners.
She called on all concerned parties, particularly, local leaders to work together to curb crimes among the youth.
Figures from RCS show that Rwanda’s prisons accommodated 85,666 inmates as at 18th December 2022.
Of these, 80,024 are men representing 93.4%, women are 5,642 equivalent to 6.6%.
Overall, the youth account for over 60% of all inmates incarcerated in Rwanda’s prisons.
