Preserving environment is a shared responsibility

As Rwanda jointed the rest of the world to celebrate ‘World Environment Day’ on 5th June, it was a moment to reflect on our actions and behaviours towards environmental sustainability.

Today, we are not only restoring the ecosystem that has been degraded in the last decade, but also conserving the ecosystems that are still intact through different ways such as growing trees, developing green cities, rewilding gardens, cleaning up rivers and coasts. This is the responsibility of every human being and more efforts are needed to ensure our environment is safe for future generations.

What does this mean for the private sector in Rwanda in the manufacturing sector and how can it contribute? Some of the things companies in manufacturing can do is to invest in eco-friendly technologies, use renewable materials as much as possible, treat their waste, use eco-friendly packaging materials, and contribute to activities that have a positive impact such us planting trees.

A good example of one of the companies that brought an innovative idea to support sustaining the environment is SKOL Brewery Ltd which lately invested in a production line to make mineral and sparkling water packaged in returnable glass bottles, the first on the Rwandan market as for the moment other water brands are packaged in plastic bottles.

With Rwanda that ratified the law prohibiting the manufacturing, importation, use and sale of plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items including plastic bottles in 2019 with a grace period of 2 years for users to have switched to eco-friendly materials, SBL’s shareholder felt a sense of obligation and responsibility that time. So, he committed to become Rwanda’s first provider of mineral water in eco-friendly packaging materials.

SKOL does not stop there, the company is very conscious of wastewater treatment, hence it has a wastewater treatment plant through which used water is recycled and poured back in the wetland being safe for the people and ecosystem. SKOL has also committed to a significant investment that will further refine the company’s management of wastewater.

Expended efforts prove that it is possible to make change if proactive measures are put in place at the right. Therefore, preserving environment should be a shared responsibility to minimize threats to biodiversity in the ecosystem. The time is now!
