The coalition was established in Goma on October 12, 2026. The city is under the control of the AFC/M23 alliance.

AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka announced the formation of the FRN, saying it would replace the AFC, which was approaching its third anniversary.

Kabila will serve as FRN president, while Nangaa, AFC/M23 deputy coordinator Bertrand Bisimwa and Major General Makenga will serve as vice presidents.

The coalition is expected to bring together members of AFC/M23 and the Twirwaneho armed group, as well as other individuals opposed to the government of President Félix Tshisekedi.

Major General Makenga will also head the FRN's military wing.

The formation of the coalition comes days after Kabila addressed the Congolese people, accusing the government of ignoring recommendations he made in May 2025 on how to restore peace in the country.

Kabila said the DRC had fallen under authoritarian rule and accused Tshisekedi of prolonging a war he could not win for political gain.

Kabila, who led the DRC from 2001 to 2019, called on Congolese citizens to stand up and fight for their country. He also said he would soon announce a new initiative he had launched.

Kabila has been based in Goma since May 2025. The city is controlled by AFC/M23. He has also travelled to several African countries for diplomatic engagements.
